Feeding guide

Eqceed Ultra Senior is formulated for older horses as well as those with digestive issues or poor teeth. Feed with good quality free-choice hay or pasture. Start with 10-12 lb of feed and adjust up or down to maintain a good body condition. Do not feed more than 5 lb in one meal. For horses prone to choking, with poor teeth, or those otherwise needing softer feed, Eqceed Ultra Senior can be softened with warm water or soaked to form a wet mash. Try adding one cup of water to every 2 to 3 lb of feed 10 to 15 minutes prior to a meal. The amount of water can be adjusted as needed. Always provide plenty of fresh, clean water and free-choice salt. Store feed in cool, dry conditions to prevent spoiling. Inspect feed for freshness and for mold and insect contamination daily. Feed within 30 days of manufacturing date for best results.

This feed’s published directions depend on age, forage, or the individual horse, so the calculator does not work out an amount. Read the directions, then enter the amount you feed to see how long a bag lasts.

What you feed

Weigh feed in pounds; scoop sizes vary. Always provide fresh water and follow the current bag tag.

How this is calculated

These calculations apply the published directions and do not assess the whole ration. A range given per 100 lb of body weight is multiplied by your horse’s weight ÷ 100; a fixed daily range is not. Bag duration is the bag weight divided by the daily amount. Pounds are shown to the quarter pound (to the hundredth below a pound), with a range rounded inward so it never leaves the published directions; days are shown to the half day, rounded down.

Features & benefits

  • Superdosed phytase and multi-carbohydrase enzymes along with xylo-oligosaccharides to maximize fiber digestion and nutrient utilization
  • Coconut medium chain fatty acids with a high percentage of lauric acid to boost performance and favorably enhance the gut microbiome
  • Flaxseed and stabilized rice bran provide Omega 3 and 6 fatty acids for reduced inflammation and increased stamina
  • Biotin to promote and maintain the growth of healthy hooves and hair coat

A high fat, alfalfa-based feed ideal for horses with metabolic issues, hard keepers, rescue horses, and horses with gastric issues, such as ulcers. Developed specifically for older horses, this feed features an alfalfa-based formula with a higher nutrient and fat content to provide older horses with the digestive assistance and energy they need. It is a softer feed that can be mixed with water for horses that have difficulty chewing and swallowing, and can be used as a sole ration for horses unable to eat hay or pasture. Works well for horses of any age where you want to maximize fiber and keep starch and sugar low.

Questions about this feed

Short answers to what people ask. Always follow the feeding directions on the bag tag.

Every feeding question

  • Can this feed be softened for a horse with poor teeth?

The published directions permit softening with warm water. Follow the product’s instructions for preparation and meal size; if your horse cannot eat hay, ask for a complete feeding plan.

  • How do I change my horse to a different feed?

Make feed changes gradually, replacing a little of the old feed with the new feed at a time over about two weeks. Keep forage and water available, follow each product’s directions, and monitor appetite, manure, and body condition. Ask for an individual plan if your horse has a health concern. Read University of Minnesota guidance →

  • How do I measure a scoop of feed in pounds?

Weigh the empty scoop, then weigh it filled as you normally feed it and subtract the empty weight. Different feeds can weigh different amounts in the same scoop. Recheck when you change feeds; the feeding directions are based on weight.

  • Is a handful of feed enough to supply vitamins and minerals?

A fortified feed is intended to be fed at its recommended rate. A small handful may supply too little of its vitamin and mineral fortification. If your horse needs fewer calories, consider a ration balancer suited to the forage and feeding situation rather than simply cutting a conventional feed below its directions. Review Ultra Balancer →

  • When should I consider a senior feed?

Look at chewing ability, body condition, and the horse’s ability to use its current ration, as well as age. Dental problems or unexplained weight loss need veterinary assessment. A feed called “senior” does not automatically replace hay; check the specific product’s directions. Discuss your horse’s feeding plan →

  • 1 more question
    • Can I compare daily feeding cost instead of bag price?

Yes. Divide the bag price by its weight in pounds, then multiply by your daily feeding amount. Compare feeds at their own recommended rates and include any forage or supplements the feeding program needs. Your dealer can provide the current bag price.
